Description
The mill of the Kuldiga castle was built on the foundations of the 13th century castle’s fortification wall, guard tower and settled on the right bank of the Aleksupite waterfall, which is the highest (4.5 meters) natural waterfall in Latvia. In the 17th century the waterfall was transformed, so that its waters could be used for the first paper mill in Kurzeme. Later the mill was rebuilt and adapted for threshing grain.
In local folklore, you can find many stories about secret passages and caves in the cellars of the mill and below the river Venta.
The present view an old mill building was acquired in the 19th century. Currently, the building is under reconstruction, and can be viewed from the outside.
In 2015. the first of the mill complex buildings was restored to accommodate guest from all over the world. A wooden house at the old brick bridge across Venta was transformed into two cosy, in historical style decorated apartments with separate kitchen and utility room. In each dwelling can rest four visitors.
