The statue of the Happy Prince stood high above the city. It was covered with gold, its eyes were bright blue jewels, and a red jewel hung from its waist. Everyone thought that it was very beautiful.   ‘Why aren’t you like the Happy Prince?’ mothers said to their little boys when they cried. Sad men looked at the statue and said, ‘I am glad that someone in the world is happy.’ One night a little bird flew alone over the city. The other birds were all in Egypt now. ‘Where can I stay tonight?’ he thought. Then he saw the statue.......Read more

Five hundred years before the first outsiders arrived in central Alaska, there was a fierce Yup'ik warrior named Aganugpak. All of his people knew him to be the bravest and strongest warrior of his time. His skill with harpoon and bow and arrow was legendary. Aganugpak lived during a time of misery and war. All across the icy tundra, warring groups fought. Blood was shed daily, and people lived in constant fear of attack. The Yup'ik people lived in underground houses carved from the dirt and protected from the cold by thick layers of sod. The smoke from their cooking fires drifted up and out......Read more

Daryl Ralston and John Hampton waved their hands. Mrs. Fuller ignored them. They always had an answer. Often it was not the one she wanted the class to hear. She looked over the faces suddenly studying the floor or looking for something in their notebooks. "Can anyone define justice for me?" she repeated to the class. Daryl and John continued to wave frantically. Mrs. Fuller looked hopefully around for someone else to respond. No one did. She sighed. "All right, Daryl," she said. "Tell the class the meaning of......Read more

Setting: Ram Dass was a young man from the United States visiting Japan when this happened. He had been taking training in the Japanese martial art of Aikido and he was pretty proud of his skill – and anxious to show it off. The train clanked and rattled through the suburbs of Tokyo on a drowsy spring afternoon. Our car was comparatively empty – a few housewives with their kids in tow, some old folks going shopping. I gazed absently at the drab houses and dusty hedgerows. At one station the doors opened, and suddenly the afternoon quiet was shattered by a man bellowing......Read more

A long, long time ago, when I was a little, little girl, my Gran’pa let me come along on his weekly visit to his apple orchard. “It’s the last piece of land I kept,” he told me, waving his hand in a friendly “hello” at every passerby, “after I moved into town.” “Gran’pa!” I called, running to keep up with him. “How come you know so many people?” He stopped to let me catch up. “Don’t know’em by name—just by heart, Honey…. Ain’t nobody a stranger to......Read more

A 400-meter tower designed by RMJM for the Russian energy giant Gazprom has gained final approval from the city of St. Petersburg, despite opposition from residents and UNESCO. At 77 stories tall, the new tower, known as the Okhta Center, will eclipse the city’s tallest structure, the spire of St. Peter and Paul Cathedral, by more than a factor of three and may become the tallest building in Europe. The building will serve as the headquaters for Gazprom's oil unit OAO Gazprom Neft, and include a concert hall, art museum, hotel and a business center. While supporters of the project say it promises......Read more
